OSHA cited Chattanooga-based company

OSHA cited Chattanooga-based company Day & Zimmerman NPS Inc for exposing its employees to electric shock hazards at TVA’s Sequoyah Nuclear Power Plant.

Day & Zimmerman NPS Inc. faces $71,599 in proposed penalties which came from an arc flash accident at Sequoyah which burned two workers sending them to a nearby hospital in March of this year. The nuclear plant contractor failed to maintain adequate safety practices for work it was performing at Sequoyah.

They failed to require employees to wear protective clothing and equipment, conduct pre-job briefings with employees on energy source controls, removal of a ground and test device and allow potential for residual electrical energy to accumulate.

“These serious injuries could have been prevented if the company had implemented effective work practices to reduce the risk of electric shock hazards,”  – William Cochran, OSHA Nashville Area Office Director.

OSHA Update on Arc Flash Regulations

The general industry electrical installation standards found in Subpart S of 29 CFR Part 1910 to include, among other requirements, a more specific reference to the NFPA 70E 2018 requirements.

“The employer shall provide the safety related work practices and shall train the employee who shall then implement them.”

OSHA 1910.269(I)(6) Flame resistant (FR) clothing and PPE shall be used by the employee based upon the incident energy exposure associated with the specific task.

“Switchboards, panelboards,…, likely to require examination, adjustment, servicing or maintenance while energized shall be field marked to warn qualified persons of potential electric arc flash hazards.”
